Karen Unland is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Taproot Publishing Inc. and the Alberta Podcast Network. She holds a Master in Journalism from Carleton University and previously worked as a reporter and editor for 14 years at the Edmonton Journal. In 2011, she left the newsroom to start a consulting business and teach journalism. Taproot Publishing helps Edmontonians understand their community better through a local journalism site called Taproot Edmonton, which started in 2016. The outlet began by publishing longform stories prompted by questions submitted by members. Taproot has since grown into a source of curiosity-driven original stories and locally focused podcasts, all in the service of informing Edmontonians about what is going on in their community. Additionally, Taproot helps businesses and organizations understand their own communities better through a B2B briefings service that largely funds the journalism part of Taproot. Karen was named one of Edmonton’s Top 40 under 40 by Avenue magazine.
