Negin Ashouri is on a mission to help improve women’s quality of life through the development of specialty medical devices. She co-founded Montréal based FemTherapeutics, a company that utilizes artificial intelligence to personalize products specifically for each patient. The first product, called a pessary, is used in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and was developed as part of the Surgical Innovation program at McGill University. Current pessary designs are over 50 years old and fail about 40 percent of the time, resulting in no other option but expensive and invasive reconstructive surgeries. FemTherapeutics looks to replace dated pessary designs, which are prone to failing, by creating product technology that allows doctors to 3D-print each prossary specifically to the measurements of their patient. This technology is aimed to help one in 10 women who are suffering from this condition, a treatment that represents a $1.6 billion market.
