Katie Forsyth is the co-founder of Friendly Composting, a business that aims to tackle food waste within Kamloops, British Columbia. The business was founded in March 2020 and has since diverted over 800,000 lbs of food waste from landfills, part of its goal to reduce pollution and greenhouse emissions. Friendly Composting promotes sustainability by providing waste management solutions and education for local businesses and residents. The business began when Katie and her friend Claire, who were roommates at the time, realized they could not easily compost kitchen waste in Kamloops. They quickly began buying up recycled buckets and picking up compost from customers, driving it to Holmwood Farm for processing. The business continues to provide this service with a larger team consisting of part-time staff and casual drivers. Friendly Composting was also a finalist in the Enactus Canada Student Entrepreneur National Championship competition for its work in the community.
