Becca Pereira started her own pop-up restaurant in Toronto, called Spice Girl Eats, after a charitable challenge she gave her Instagram followers to donate to a non-profit organization that helps Black Torontonians combat food insecurity. Inspired by the overwhelming response, Becca and her mother Corina, a professional chef from Goa, India, began cooking authentic Goan cuisine using a book of handwritten Goan recipes passed down from Becca’s great-grandmother. Spice Girl Eats quickly broke even four months in and has since cooked more than 45 dishes for thousands of customers, attracting attention in Toronto’s competitive food industry, including a one-night stint at Soho House. Spice Girl Eats has been praised by the likes of Braden Chong, co-founder of Toronto’s Sunny’s Chinese, and was selected as one of 45 Women-Owned Canadian Businesses You Need to Know by Complex CA in 2022.
